Lake Easton State Park

Terry and I were looking forward to visiting Lake Easton State Park ever since we drove pass it on I-90 on our way to Moses Lake earlier this year. We were lucky as on Tuesday, I found a full hook-up site had become available for this weekend. I immediately called and booked the reservation and then called Terry to tell him the good news.

We left the house on Friday around 1:30. The sky was cloudless and it was in the mid-seventies, so it was hard to stick around for too long when we knew there was a lake calling our name. After stopping for gas and a quick potty break, we arrived at camp a little before 3:45. The park seemed larger than some as it was about a mile drive from where we checked in to where the full hook-up loop was. There are 45 hook-up sites and we were in site #3.

Terry and I both unloaded and set-up camp. The sun was shining and it was nice since our site was mostly shaded, but some rays of sun did shine thru the trees. After we unpacked our gear, we took a quick walk to the day use area. They had a little playground and a roped of swimming area for kids down there. The lake looked quite peaceful as no boats over 10hp are allowed to launch. From there, we walked around our camp loop. There are some nice sites closer to the water with lake views that I would pick in the future if we had a chance, but I am still happy with our site. The worst part of the park is it is located right off of I-90 so you can hear the road noise. At least we have a camper, so the trucks won’t keep us awake at night.

When we got back to our site, the temperature was in the mid-eighties. For dinner, Terry barbequed sirloin burgers for himself and Boca burgers for me that we made chiliburgers with. After dinner, Terry wanted to work off his pound of beef he ate, so we took a quick walk around the lake.

Once back at camp, Terry made a nice fire for us to enjoy. Once the sun went down, the temperature did start to drop. We both roasted marshmallows and made s’mores by the fire. Before bed, I quickly washed my face. Terry took a quick, cold shower as we forgot to turn on the hot water heater and he wanted to clean up a little.

On Saturday morning when we got up, it was in the low fifties. Terry got up before me and had coffee. Zeus got impatient waiting for me and wanted out, so Terry took him for a quick walk while I got dressed. When I got up, I made some hot coca (which a chipmunk later knocked over) and enjoyed the sweatshirt weather as I knew it will be very warm later in the day.

For breakfast, I made Terry’s favorite sausage gravy that we had with eggs and rolls. It was good like always. After we were done eating, we decided to take the canoe down to the lake. Terry was able to use Zeus’s bike trailer to haul the canoe with since the lake wasn’t that close to our campsite. After the canoe was in the water, I dragged the bike trailer back to our site and loaded it up with our gear and rode my bike back down to the day use area.
Our canoe ride was very nice. The water was glassy when we first took off and we took our time paddling around the lake. Zeus didn’t mind the water at all. His biggest problem was he wanted to share my seat with me so it made the paddling difficult. After about an hour on the lake, the wind started to pick up, so we decided to come in. We enjoyed some refreshments at a picnic table for a little bit before packing up our gear and heading back to our site. I thought it was fun by the water as the people watching was great and the sun was shining. I just wish I had brought chairs down since the picnic table bench wasn’t too comfortable.

Once back at camp, we hooked up the bike trailer and decided to go on a bike ride. The temperature was in the upper eighties and we were hoping to ride into town and possibly find a place to get an ice cream. We started our ride by heading thru the standard campsite loops. All the sites seemed nice, but the hook-up sites seemed closer to the water. From there, we rode back near the hook-up sites and up towards the John Wayne trail. The trail took us around that lake and eventually dropped us into the small town of Easton. Along the way, we got some amazing views of the lake and nearby mountains. There wasn’t much to Easton; it had a gas station and a saloon. Zeus wasn’t enjoying the trailer, so we just decided to keep riding and head back to camp. In the end, we made a big loop around the lake. It was a pretty mellow ride, but I did feel hot and dusty once we got back.

Back at camp, we decided to have dinner. I brought stuff for chili Verde. I had the meat cooking in a croq pot all day so all we had to do was warm up some black beans and dinner was ready. We also grilled some jalapeno peppers to add to the Mexican dinner.

After dinner, we walked down to the lake. It was still in the seventies outside so we took a quick dip in the water to refresh ourselves. I took a very quick dip as the water was very cold, but I have to admit, it did fell good. Once back at our site, Terry made a nice fire. We sat by the fire and talked until it became time for bed. Before going to sleep, we both took warm showers in the camper.

On Sunday, I tried to sleep in a little to no avail. We took a quick walk down to the fishing bridge with Zeus first thing in the morning. For breakfast, I made chorizo and eggs. The chorizo meat I got was really good and turned out to be fairly lean when I cooked it. After breakfast, we cleaned up and slowly started to pack up camp. We had everything loaded and started our drive home around 10:30. The radio said it was already eighty-six degrees in Seattle as we were coming down the mountain pass. By the time we got home, it was in the mid-nineties. The rest of the afternoon I relaxed outside reading my book and Terry piddled around the camper. We definitely liked Lake Easton and would plan another trip there sometime.

Weekend Preparation: Lake Easton State Park

After the nice weekend we had last week at Ike Kinswa State Park, we decided to find a spot to camp again this coming weekend. We looked online and about everything was full. We opted for Millersylvania State Park since it was located south of Olympia and we wanted some place close. Terry wasn't too excited about it, but we figured we would have to check it out sometime since we have a mission of visiting all of WA state parks (well, it's my plan, I don't know if Terry is aware of it though).

Amazingly on Tuesday morning when I was checking availability, I found a full hook-up site at Lake Easton available. I immediately called and booked the site. It's should be less than 2 hours away near Snoqualamie Pass on I-90. So far, it is forecasted to be sunny in the upper seventies, which will be perfect. I am definitely looking forward to this weekend since I have been wanting to visit this park for a while.

Ike Kinswa State Park

Terry had made reservations at the beginning of the week for us to spend the weekend at Ike Kinswa State Park. It’s located a little south of us, on Mayfield Lake, in an area we have been wanting to check out. It was our first camping trip our new Bigfoot camper so we were excited to test it out. We packed during the week and had a few minor bits of loading to do when Terry arrived home from work.

We were able to leave our house around 2:30 on Friday. Due to the location of the park, we didn’t have to drive on any major freeways and it took us a little under an hour and a half to get there. It was a gorgeous drive with the sun out and we were able to get some great views of Mount Rainier along the way.

The last campsite available was #41 which was the ADA site. We got lucky, as it was a full hook-up site in a nice location. When we got to camp, Terry was able to set –up the camper while I proceeded to break the easy-u canopy. I was trying to be helpful and erect the thing by myself while Terry unloaded, but the Pereira in me broke loose and we got to see how weak the aluminum roof support rods are. Luckily, Terry has a little MacGyver in him and was able to fix it using a plastic tent stake and his Leatherman. Meanwhile, I sat at the picnic table in awe and finished my book.

After fixing the canopy, we made dinner. We barbequed ribs and had salad and couscous. It was very good. Once dinner was finished, we decided to go for a bike ride thru the other camp loops. It was Zeus’s first outing in the bike trailer. He didn’t seem to enjoy it too much but we hope with more trips he will get used to it. Towards the end, he did stop whining, but I think it was due to his own exhaustion.
When we got back to our campsite, Terry made a fire and we enjoyed a little wine before heading in for the night. We both took quick showers in our camper before heading to bed.

On Saturday morning, Zeus woke up bright and early and wanted to go outside. I was hoping after he went potty he would want to go back to sleep (like he does everyday at home), but he didn’t. So, we stayed outside waiting for Terry to get up. Two hours later, Terry finally awoke and proceeding to his first task of the day: making coffee. It was overcast, but warm in the morning and we hoped the sun would make an appearance later in the day.
For breakfast I made sausage gravy and eggs while Terry cooked the biscuits. The new oven actually cooked fairly well, but we still have to flip them half way thru their cooking. After breakfast, we loaded up the bikes for a bike ride. First, we headed down the road a little ways to look at the boat launch area. From there, we rode back to the day use area. We found a little grassy knoll and sat for a while watching boats go by. Then, we rode back thru the camp loops and to our site. Zeus was better in the trailer this time then he was before. He did start to whine a little in the middle of the ride but we are hoping with more trips, he will get better.

When we got back to our campsite, we decided to take a walk. There is a nice trail the edges the lake from the camp check-in area to the far camp loop. We walked the whole trail and picked out our sites for future camping. We really like site 14 and 16 as they sit close to the water and have good views of the lake. The walk was very nice and peaceful.

It was in the afternoon when we got back, so we had a small snack of Triscuts and cheese to hold us over until dinner. I sat and read my book for a little bit, while Terry and Zeus took a quick nap.
For dinner, I made tortellini with an Italian sausage tomato sauce. It was delicious. After we were done eating, we decided to walk down by the lake again. We found a little beach and sat upon a log and enjoyed the sun. For it being forecasted it was suppose to rain, we got lucky with sunny weather. Terry met a friend by the lake and they talked for a while about boy stuff.

Once we returned back to camp, it was time for a campfire. Terry made a really nice fire and I was just a little bummed I didn’t have any marshmallows to cook. The camp host stopped by our site for a quick visit and Zeus wasn’t too happy about that. He was a little cranky and tired so kept barking at the camp host. As the fire got closer to dying down, I headed into the camper for a shower. Terry came in soon after me. It definitely feels nice to clean up before bed.

I slept in a little on Sunday morning. Terry was up before me and made coffee and cleaned the barbeque before I decided to get out of bed. It has rained a little in the early morning and was still a little drizzly when I got up, however, Terry assured me it was just the water coming off the trees, not really raining. It was a nice, relaxing morning. I was able to have some hot cocoa and work on my journal and Terry slowly loaded up some gear.
For breakfast, we had bacon, eggs and toast. We both enjoy having bacon for breakfast while camping. After breakfast, I did the dishes and packed up the inside of the camper, while Terry loaded all the outside stuff. We ended up leaving camp a little before noon. On the way home, we stopped in Elbe at the Rainier Railroad Dining Company and had lunch. It was fun, the food was okay, but the atmosphere was very unique since the restaurant is in an old dining car. We got home a little before 3:00 and got to enjoy the rest of the afternoon at home unpacking and thinking about our next trip.

Weekend Preparation: Ike Kinswa State Park

So, Terry and I are getting our gear together to head down to Ike Kinswa State Park this weekend. We are excited to check out the area since we have never been there and think that we may actually get halfway decent weather. It should only be an hour and a half drive down there. I can't wait for until we get to leave, but I guess I should finish packing first.

On another note, one of Terry's co-workers mentioned we should check out this place in Oregon sometime. It is in eastern Oregon and looks to be about 8 hours away, so maybe next summer we will have to plan a long weekend there since it does look beautiful.

An exciting day in the garden

I was very excited today when I was walking in my garden and noticed my cherry tree actually has cherries!!! I bought the tree last year when we first moved into our house and it didn't produce any fruit last year. I thought this year would be another dud year, but was surprised to see a couple (and by couple, I mean 2) cherries hanging from the branches today.

I also had my first rose blooming today and was happy to see my strawberries are growing. My garden is liking the little bit of sun we have received the last few days. I hope it continues to shine so my garden will continue to grow.

Father's Day Weekend

Like on Mother's Day, Terry and I headed up to see my parents in Ferndale for Father's Day. We took our new camper up there to show it to my parents. We wanted to bring the truck up anyways so we could borrow their canoe. We had a relaxing, sunny weekend.

The new camper

On Saturday, we went to the Demming Log Show and stopped at my grandma's house in Lynden on the way home. Since grandma is moving soon, she gave Terry and I a bunch of her gardening tools that she won't need any more. We were stoked as we needed some of the things that she had laying around.
Terry and me at the log show

On Sunday, we hung out at that house and did some yard work. My mom and I did have to run into town to get steaks for dinner, so I picked up Terry's anniversary gift while we were out. I know it isn't our anniversary for another couple weeks, but I decided to get the gift now so we can use it this summer. When we got back, mom and Trinity played a little croquet and Terry played with his gift. Grandma and Ed came over for dinner. Terry and I took off soon after dinner and made it home without traffic.

Zinnia and Zeus after a long day

Today is a fabulous day. It's sunny and seventy-four degrees out. I really hope this weather lasts! Zeus slept most of the day since he is still recovering from the weekend. I have a long list of chores to do, but would rather enjoy the sun. Maybe I will compromise.

Yes, he's a little spoiled

I do admit, my dog is very spoiled, but he is too cute not to spoil. Today he decided to take advantage of clean sheets on the bed and sleep in.

Now, if only the sun would come out

So, according to the news this morning, we are having the wettest and coldest June since records began in 1891. Just my luck. I am getting tired of all the rain and my flowers are suffering as well. I can't wait until I can enjoy an afternoon reading in the sun. At least now, I can read on my new patio set that Terry put together for me over the weekend. I am excited about the patio furniture. Now, I just need sun.

Bringing Home Baby

Today we got to bring home our new camper. The lady at the dealership said we got the Cadillac of truck campers; that made me feel old. I swear I am too young to have a Cadillac.

Terry said the truck handled it good on the road. It definately looks bigger on the truck then it did on the ground on the lot.

It just barely fit behind the gate in the back. We can move the car trailer back if we need to later, but at least for now it fits.

The Addition to our Family

Okay, I know we said we were going to take our time finding the cab-over camper that is right for us, but that didn't happen. We just couldn't pass up the deal we found on this new 2006 9.5' Bigfoot. The truck is at the shop getting the tie downs installed and I can't wait to bring the camper home on Thursday.

And to celebrate our purchase we went out for a nice dinner of chicken wings and beer. Who could ask for more?

The diet starts up again tomorrow!

This is for my mom...

Since my mom is in Hawaii, these shots are for her. I took them over the weeekend when Terry and I were at my parents' house selling our trailer. My mom's garden was blooming and I don't want her to miss it!

We miss you!
